Brian Eno Urges Support to Get Together for Palestine Track to UK Christmas No 1.
A campaign is aiming to send a traditional song from Palestine to the peak of the festive singles chart. The effort aims to send support to Gaza's residents while also showcasing Palestinian cultural expression.
A Possibility for Solidarity and an "Unlikely Coup"
Musician and artist Brian Eno, who performs on the track, stated that the single 'Lullaby' represents a moment to stand with Palestinians over the Christmas period. He acknowledged the potential for an unlikely festive coup.
“That would be amazing if that came to pass, yes,” he stated. “I wouldn't be completely disheartened if it doesn’t, Christmas singles are a unique phenomenon.”
Powerful Theme of Dignity and Freedom
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who performs on the version of a traditional lullaby called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the track's defiant core message.
“It occupies a very special place for countless listeners,” Barghouti said. “The essence is that I would choose to perish with honor than exist without freedom. This is the primary message of the song; we desire to exist a life of dignity that we merit as a people.”
Production History and Featured Artists
The single was laid down after a major charity concert held in the autumn. Initially planned to be done as a live recording, the rendition was shelved during the concert due to time constraints.
The notable list of artists appearing on Lullaby includes a group of prominent voices from the music world. All were part of the September show, which managed to collect a considerable total for charitable causes.
Creation and Launch
Lullaby was produced by a trio of music creators. The single blends a fusion of the traditional Arabic lyrics with contemporary English verses.
The organizers behind the project have clarified that their objective is to raise as much as possible for a charitable pot. These resources will be distributed to projects in Palestine through an partnering humanitarian organization.
“We haven't set a fixed goal,” a representative explained. “We will pursue as much as possible. Obviously, the higher the total, the greater the impact. All proceeds are directed out to Gaza.”
The situation in the territory was described as its extreme devastation, with a huge proportion of property reportedly in ruins or severely impacted.
“Given that reality, a couple of million won't make that much difference. But I think what truly matters is above all raising awareness for this issue and proving that another narrative exists.”
The song is set to be released this Friday. Additionally, a full recording of the charity concert will be made available for streaming on a digital service from later in the month.
