Offspring of Previous South African Leader Zuma Refutes Terror Allegations as Court Case Starts
The offspring of former South African Leader Zuma has denied all charges to terror-linked charges at the beginning of her court case in the port city of Durban city.
Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being charged over remarks she posted on social media in the past during deadly unrest in South Africa that came after the detention of her dad.
A seven-day period of chaos in several parts of the country in July 2021, including plundering and arson, resulted in at least 300 killed and caused damage worth an estimated 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).
Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of encouraging this unrest and is charged with charges of provocation to commit terror acts and public disorder.
Context of the Legal Matter
The protests were concentrated in the areas of Gauteng and KZN and followed the former president's arrest for ignoring a legal directive to testify at an investigation into allegations of graft while he was in power.
She has always rejected the accusations against her, with her attorney earlier labelling the state's case as weak.
She has also consistently stated the allegations against her were an attempt to settle political grievances with her parent after he founded his own party and competed against the ANC.
Support and Case Arguments
This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "abuse of power" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and family-related targeting" against the former president and his relatives.
A handful of supporters from her political organization, uMkhonto weSizwe, turned up outside the judicial building, while her parent and other organization officials were present at the hearings inside.
The defense has argued that the evidence presented by the state is insufficient and fails to provide concrete grounds for a guilty verdict.
