Patrick Bamford Joins Sheffield United After Leading Derogatory Songs Targeting Manager Wilder
The striker has signed with the Championship side just seven months after leading derogatory songs aimed at the team's coach, Chris Wilder.
The 32-year-old striker, a free agent since leaving Leeds, has signed a agreement joining the second-tier club in difficulty until January. His seven-year time at Elland Road concluded by mutual consent in August.
Among the player's final notable acts as a Leeds player involved leading offensive chants about Wilder during the club’s success festivities in April. Currently, the former England international will be playing under Wilder as Sheffield United's boss seeks to rescue his beloved club out of the bottom places.
Previous Conflict Between the Striker & Wilder
Both men had a past before Leeds moved up back to the Premier League the previous campaign and United lost the promotion decider to Sunderland. Wilder described the forward as a "muppet" when the roles were reversed in 2018-19 and Sheffield United secured automatic promotion while Leeds missed out in the playoffs.
Making Amends & Moving Forward
Everything seems has been forgiven and forgotten with Sheffield United, the Championship’s least productive attack, in desperate need of a boost up front and Bamford aiming to revive his playing days.
The Wilder chant spread widely in April. A repentant Patrick and the Leeds manager, Daniel Farke, phoned the Sheffield United manager the following day.
Wilder said at the time: “Had a conversation with Pat yesterday and I’ve no problem at all with it. I'm uncertain about the language from a fellow pro! However I appreciated and admired him giving me a call.
“We had a short while and the same again I talked with Daniel Farke too and we had a half-hour chat with him and he is a super guy, a class act. Back in my playing days we would dish it out and accept it and that is an integral part of football across all levels, including a Sunday morning. I have absolutely no issue. I am cool with the situation and I said that to Pat.”
