The Mayor-Elect states he will live in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate during his campaign.
A Traditional Abode
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors since the World War II era.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key platform, was not quick to announce this decision immediately following his electoral win in November.
"This decision came down to the security of my family and the imperative to dedicating all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda voters supported," stated Mamdani in a statement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area famous for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, Astoria will forever remain a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he added.
A Contentious Issue
During his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.
However his opponents, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit even though he came from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side during his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a venue for official events, and championed significant upgrades of the older mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his humble Astoria digs.
Featuring butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.
Within, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.
The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is under rent control, meaning the city imposes caps on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.
Tenants consider these apartments crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces the average income.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
