Their mission for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—an event that could contain the key to defeating him once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern
When she finds Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. A clever observation a viewing device pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies not within the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.
In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy come across an injured and paranoid man. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event wasn't just a defensive killing.
Like many elements of the final season, the significance of the events in the tunnel originates in the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission
This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the captain, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an different blood composition.
This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to hand over to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. The man in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.
Unlocking the Mystery
Based on what is known about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase most likely held some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, leading to the awakening of his powers—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the children under Brenner's care.
A second theory, the case could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing hours later as a different person.
